A pastel by Edgar Degas now for the first time in a Dutch Public Collection

This pastel, Woman at her Toilet, which dates from 1886, represents an intimate scene, source of inspiration for Van Gogh. We can thus understand this acquisition in a public auction in November 2019 by the Amsterdam Museum.

According to our researches, dancers come first (36%) amongst Degas's work, far ahead of the bathers (18%). The theme of bathers remains nevertheless major in Degas's. It reaches its peak between 1880 and 1900. It was around 1880 that Degas began to present his bathers, often from the back, at their toilets or in the bath.
