The first exhibition in which Degas participated was held in the spring of 1865 at the Palais des Champs Elysées. Very early on, it was followed by many others in Paris but also in England and the United States. In his early days, Degas was associated with group exhibitions and very quickly we find him in London, Glasgow, New York, Brussels and even Moscow. The first exhibition exclusively devoted to him was held in Paris at the Georges Petit gallery in the spring of 1924. 335 works were exhibited including 73 paintings and 251 pastels and drawings, thus showing Degas in his diversity and techniques. Then came thematic exhibitions: Degas and brothels under the title "Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso: Bordell und Boudoir" in 2005 at the Kunsthalle in Tübingen, "Degas and the Ballet" in 2011 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, "Degas and the nude" in 2011-2012 in Boston and Paris, "Degas at the Opera" in 2019-2020 in Paris and Washington. We cannot forget the important "Degas" retrospective in Paris and New York in 1988-1989. Then, in 2023-2024, his name was associated with that of Manet on the occasion of the "Manet Degas" exhibition dedicated to him by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2023, the Bibliothèque nationale de France-Richelieu also dedicated a fascinating exhibition to him under the title "Degas In black and white" through his drawings, prints and photographs.
We now count nearly 3,300 exhibitions in which Degas participated in one way or another. All his diversity and talent are expressed, confirming all the interest we have in him
